Hundreds of students without a home will live in a village of temporary huts as a university has run out of accommodation.

The city of Lincoln is bursting at the seams as 3,000 students have spent the past few weeks signing tenancy agreements – but 200 students still have nowhere to go.

To solve the problem, the University of Lincoln has brought in 100 sheds for the students to share.

The huts are fully-furnished with two single beds, heating, toilets and showers. The university claims the area is safe for students as CCTV security has been set up.

The university has dubbed the huts as ‘Festival Village’ and set them up on Brayfield Campus near an engineering block.

The aim is to rehouse the new students as other accommodation in the city becomes available.

University registrar Chris Spendlove said: “We’ve had unprecedented demand from students asking for accommodation.

“We housed everyone in permanent accommodation who applied to us by August 21, but we had rather a late surge in applications, because we are recruiting a lot of students from further afield this year.

“We’ve been sourcing alternative permanent accommodation to help students as much as we can, but we’ve come to a position where there is no immediately available accommodation left in the city, which is why we’ve created the student village.

“Now we are working with private landlords and other contacts and we are aware of alternatives coming up in the next few weeks.”

Some students have been less than complimentary about the huts – one described the area as looking like a caravan site.

As already reported on Letting Agent News, Lincoln is not the only university city suffering from accommodation problems.
